Welcome to Mrs. Thurmond's Class! A little about me: I am a wife (married in 2015!) and a boymom. My dream job since I was 6 years old was to be a 1st grade teacher! (Yay! One dream achieved!). The 2018-2019 school year will be my 5th year teaching 1st Grade at Bess T Shepherd. What to expect in our room: My motto for our classroom is "We are family! We make mistakes and learn from each other. We accept each other, no matter what. We love each other and treat others with respect". There is no "I" or "my" in our room; it's "We" and "ours". This year, I expect each of my students to not only learn the content, but to really stretch and push themselves so we will all continue to grow mentally, physically, and emotionally. We may face some great challenges, but we will persevere and overcome any and all obstacles. That success will bring us great knowledge. I yearn for parental involvement. I may be your child's teacher this year, but you are your child's teacher for life. My hope is that we will work together throughout this year. Please stay updated via your child's folder, ClassDojo, phones (text/calls), 1st Grade Facebook page (BTS 1st grade), and/or email.  I will tell you in advance, there may be some concepts that your child will be learning that seem foreign to you. Please be the model they need and model a growth mindset.  Instead of saying "this is hard. I can't do this", Contact Me!!! Then you can change that statement to "Yes, this may be hard and I don't know how to do this YET, but we are going to figure it out!". You'll be amazed at the power thatt the change of verbiage you say has over your child's passion for school and motivation to work!! I can't wait to meet you all. I look forward to this school year!
